Michelle Samson presented a piece titled “Symbiosis” for the SAMASAMA Art Show & Gathering.

Artist statement: The word "symbiosis" is defined as an interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both. This composition focuses on the concept of the merging of multiple influences, media, and inspirations shaped by multiple groups and communities, a "broken social scene" of sorts. The relationship between different groups and mediums, for example music, painting, dance, writing; even corporate versus non-corporate, all coming and working together to exchange ideas in order to solve problems. If a group can zero in on the common interest around the problem to be solved - and common vision for impact - this creates power collective action. Through this composition utilizing opposing materials both fresh and dry, this idea of different groups coming together and solving problems is explored.

About the show

Soul & Ink, the premiere live screen printing business in the DC area, and Batang Kankaloo (local DJ and photographer Les Talusan) present the second Annual SAMASAMA Art Show & Gathering. Held in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, this exhibition will present original work by artists of color from diaspora communities.

The term SAMASAMA means all together in Tagalog. Bayanihan is a Filipino custom derived from the Tagalog word bayan, meaning community. The theme of the exhibit is Bayanihan, which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work, and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.

From the outside, AAPI communities are often perceived as devoid of meaningful difference in identity and experience. From the inside, our communities live vibrant, varied lives – but remain divided by a lack of exchange between our cultures and ongoing histories.

Our goal is to examine the multicultural American experience. Breaking through stereotypes and boundaries because diverse stories, perspectives, and contributions to push humanity forward.
